Anyway, one day after school, i took him to Borders (a book store) and we are sitting down on the floor between the math and science section having the classic debate we always have where i say everything is math, and Ethan disagrees.

So i put my arm around him and start giggling pointing out my math is superior and i end my argument with “so as you can see, Science is actually math’s B*tch.”
We both laughed manically.

NaNo Standings

NaNoWriMo started Nov 1st 2009 and ran through Nov 30th 2009.  Over 170,000 NaNo participants wrote 2,147,483,647 words in November and raised $646,472 for the nonprofit Letters and Light who hosts NaNo.

Where I stand with Nano

I won!  I accomplished both goals I had for Nano.  One, I wrote 50,000 words and two, I finished the book.  My final word count is 63,062.  I had written about 12,000 words (not included in the 63K) before nano started which brings the the books final word count to about 76K.  Of course, I still have editing to do… a lot of editing to do

I finished the 50K on Nov 17th and finished the book on the 24th.  This was a great experience and I hope to do it again next year.  I loved it.  It also gave me the support structure to implement a good habit – writing fiction every day.  Now that Nano is over, I find myself writing at least 1000 words per day at least 6 days per week.  I actually find myself craving to do another Nano now.  I think maybe in Jan or Feb, I will attempt to write another novel in a month.

I am also contemplating upping the goal for myself.  I finished way early and had I needed to write another 50K, I think I could have done it, but I didn’t feel the need to push myself since I had already accomplished the goal.  Next time I try this, I may go for 2 novels in a month or 80K words.

I kept a spread sheet of where I stood with Nano everyday.  Here is the daily breakdown of it all.  You can see my average words per day was 2626 that I did not quite finish the book.  I actually did finish the book, but I since I did not know how many words I was going to end with, I put in 70K as a rough estimate so it looks like I never hit it.

I found I loved 4000 + word days and I much preferred to do a few of those then take a day off.  There were some days, I just didn’t feel like writing, and if I pushed it, then I didn’t feel like writing much the next day either.  If I gave in and let the bloody digits I used to call typing fingers heal and let me mind rest I wrote better and much more the next day.

I found certain things were the enemy for me to be creative and productive.  Some of these I already knew, but a couple were surprises.

Juice and raw foods really helped reave my creative juices, but even twenty minutes of TV in the middle of the day during lunch killed them.

If my desk was cluttered, I would be distracted the whole time thinking about it.

The first word is the hardest for me.  I can put off writing all day, but as soon as I write that first word, it just pours out of me.  Then, no matter how tired I am or how long I have been writing, it bothers me to stop.  Last night I had written about 2000 words in an hour, and I was dropping with exhaustion since it was late, but I was still annoyed I had to stop.  But I had put off writing all day long until then.  This is something I am working on – to write something every day before noon.

I still don’t know where I stand on this point, I used to love to write at night time.  And I wonder if that is why I put off writing all day then it becomes easier to tackle when the sun sets.  I wonder if I would be more productive writing if instead of getting up early every day, I slept in and stayed up to the morning.  Might be something to try for a month or two.

I don’t like noise, people, or any other distractions as I wrote.  I never went to a write in for that reason.

Never underestimate the power of a good support group.  Nano brings so many people together.  I made new friends, learned something new about old friends, and connected with people around the globe all trying to write 50K in a month.  We used twitter, facebook, forums, Nano site, Nano comics, and parties to support each other.  It gives some accountability, and it is great to connect with people who are up to the same things. I love the writing parties and word wars where people raced to see who could write the most in 15 minutes, 30 minutes, an hour, or another some other predetermined length of time.

My Novel so Far

I am starting the fun process of editing.  I did do spell check and caught obvious things as I wrote, but I know I missed putting in some scene explanation.

So far the novel seems pretty good for being written in a month.  It falls in line with the other books in the series, seems to keep the spirit of the novel and characters alive, and appears to be entertaining.  It doesn’t look like I am going to have to trash much of the book which is a huge relief.

For me, Nano highlighted how important it is to a good support group for whatever major projects you tackle.  It could be writing, raw foods, or climbing Everest.
